Del. Law Helps Police and Firefighters Pay Insurance

DOVER, Del. - A new Delaware law will safeguard retired police officers and professional firefighters.

The House bill creates a funding mechanism to cover a portion of their health insurance premiums.

Gov. Jack Markell signed the bill into law early Wednesday morning with more than two dozen law enforcement officials as witnesses.

Georgetown Police Chief William Topping, chairman of the Delaware Police Chiefs Council, said in a statement, "Elected officials in Delaware recognize the vital role law enforcement plays in providing a good quality-of-life for its citizens by taking care of its police officers when their final tour of duty has been served."

"We never lose sight of how difficult your jobs can be," Markell also said. "A lot of people in the Delaware General Assembly -- Democrats and Republicans alike -- get it."
