DOVER, Del.– The annual Delaware Farmers Market Week got under way Sunday in hopes of promoting local economic development and agricultural knowledge, according to the Delaware Department of Agriculture.

Local farmers collected $2.1 million last year, $200,000 more than in 2012 and $800,000 more than in 2010, officials said. This year is on track to meet 2013 profits, they added.

Sixty-two percent of 2013 sales came from produce and the rest came from meats, cheeses, breads, jellies eggs, honey and salsa, according to the DDA.

Many markets will offer Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for those citizens who qualify, officials say. The Delaware Farmers Market Week will run from Aug. 3-9.
