Sen. Carper Mourns the Loss of James Brady

WILMINGTON, Del.- U.S. Senator Tom Carper from Delaware responds to the death of 73-year-old James Brady.  The lawmaker says he sends his deepest condolences to the former White House press secretary's wife and the rest of his family.

Brady was the first White House press secretary for President Ronald Reagan, and he suffered a severe bullet wound to the head during the assassination attempt that also wounded Reagan outside a Washington hotel in 1981.

"We lost a good man today. I was fortunate to get to know Jim and Sarah even before they made their home in Rehoboth for many years. I first met Jim when I was state treasurer and he was working for Senator Roth." said Sen. Carper. "My relationship with Jim and Sarah later grew as I worked with them on bringing about more common sense measures to prevent gun violence. Jim and Sarah made quite a team and countless American lives have been saved as a result of their efforts."

Brady died at a retirement community in Alexandria, Virginia, where he lived with his wife.
