Md. Gov. O'Malley Weighs in on Washington Redskins Name Debate

Posted:
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley says he believes it is "probably time" for the Washington Redskins football team to change its name.

O'Malley made the statement on his Facebook page Tuesday.

The Democratic governor who is mulling running for president posted: "I was asked earlier today and answered that I do believe it is probably time for the Washington Redskins to change their team name."

The team plays in Landover, Maryland, at FedEx Field.

"We hope that in every generation we become more understanding of one another & more respectful of the dignity of every individual & culture," O'Malley added on his Twitter account.

The Redskins name has been the subject of a sustained campaign by those who consider it to be a racial slur. Redskins' owner Dan Snyder and others associated with the team have long argued that the Redskins name is used with respect and honor and is a source of pride among many American Indians.
