Choptank Warns Customers About 'Green Dot' Scam

DENTON, Md. - Choptank Electric Cooperative officials say several customers have reported a recent bill collection scam called, “The Green Dot” scam.

In the scam, the caller will say they are from Choptank Electric and will tell the member that they are past due on their electric bill. They request that the member give out credit card information or find a Green Dot Money Pack, otherwise the power will be disconnected within 15 minutes.

“Choptank Electric has specific procedures and policies in place that require notices by mail well in advance. We do not place calls for cut-off or disconnect,” said Communications Specialist Beth Hallett.

Choptank Electric asks all members to avoid giving out their information to someone over the phone other than a legitimate Member Service Representative

“If someone even thinks that it could be a hoax, we ask that they hang up and call our office to confirm,” said Hallett.
