DOVER, Del. (AP) - A new law in Delaware will help people handling the affairs of individuals who have died or become incapacitated.

Legislation signed by Gov. Jack Markell on Tuesday authorizes fiduciaries to access and control digital assets and accounts of those they represent.

Officials say the law recognizes that more people are conducting more of their lives online, which can pose challenges when a person dies or becomes incapacitated. The new law allows fiduciaries to access email, social media, financial management, health care and other digital accounts.

Officials say the new law is the first of its kind in the country. It was developed with the help of the Uniform Law Commission, whose members are appointed by to help standardize state laws around the country and which endorsed model legislation last month.
