Teeing up for Changes at Cambridge Golf Course

Updated:
CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Bill Collier has that proud father look when he roams the grounds of his newly acquired golf course.  Although playing golf isn't his thing, he couldn't deny the inherent beauty of the landscape at the newly renamed Choptank River Golf and Event Center.

"It's a gorgeous piece of property.  One of the prettiest in Dorchester County.  I'd love to see it remain a golf course for future history.  We're working hard to accomplish that goal," Collier said.

That work is happening fast.  The once five star restaurant is being converted into what Collier calls a lounge, where people can enjoy drinks and take in the view.  He is also upgrading the plumbing and air conditioning to be more environmentally-friendly, alleviating the wastewater issues of years past.  But as the new name of the course suggests, events are something he wants to get involved with.

"We've got a beautiful sight for folks to have a wedding and a reception.  Various birthday parties, there's barbecues set for out here.  And then we have the potential for a golf tournament and have some food after," Collier said.

Thirty-four-year member Phil Roath, who signed up the day after he first moved to town, said the changes being made can only help make the club a destination.

"Bill has a business plan, he knows what he's doing.  He's working his plan and I'm liking everything I'm seeing.  Do we get the people back?  I hope so," Roath said.

A hope the members here and Collier share as these major changes take root.
