Maryland Man Faces DUI Charges after Crashing on Coastal Highway

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Ocean City Police say a Maryland man faces DUI charges after speeding down Coastal Highway and crashing into power equipment.

O.C. Public Information Officer Lindsay O'Neal says around 3:10 a.m. Thursday, police were following an erratic driver, identified as 21-year-old Carlton Stephenson III, of Jessup, Maryland.

O'Neal says officers attempted to pull Stephenson over, but he kept driving, and at one point was clocked by officers going 98 mile per hour on Coastal Highway.

O'Neal says at one point Stephenson almost caused a collision.

Eventually, O'Neal says Stephenson crashed into a condominium building on 72nd Street and into an electrical box and meter. She says that caused electrical fluid to go onto the highway, which is why police closed northbound Coastal Highway.

O'Neal says Delmarva Power and Ocean City Public Works cleaned up the fluid and power was restored.

O'Neal says Stephenson refused a breath test and now charges are pending against him including DUI and other related charges.

Traffic was closed to northbound drivers in that area for multiple hours, but was back open around 8 a.m.
