Sussex Academy Set to Expand

GEORGETOWN, Del. – With one phase of fundraising complete and a second about to begin, the only charter school in Sussex County is on track to generate funds it needs to expand its facilities.

Sussex Academy has announced it raised $13.8 million over two years of concentrated efforts and seeks to raise an additional $9.8 million.

The school currently serves 500 students in grades six through 10; once fully enrolled, the school will accommodate 770 students in 6th through 12th grades, the Academy's Communications Manager Gina Derrickson says. Eleventh grade will be implemented next year, and 12th the following year.

Of the funds already secured, $6.25 million were borrowed from a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development program. Private donations were responsible for the remaining funds.

“We deeply appreciate the support of more than 175 donors plus regional foundations and businesses who understand the imperative of greater educational choice for Sussex County students,” said Joseph Schell, chair of the Sussex Academy Foundation, the fundraising arm for the school.

The money left to be raised will come from a combination of private donors and loans, Derrickson says.

This second phase of fundraising will allow the school to build a new wing of classrooms, athletic fields, a library-learning center, an auditorium, a cafeteria, a warming kitchen and a professional performance stage.

An anonymous donor has helped to purchase an additional 18.5 acres of land behind the school on Airport Road, which will be used for new playing fields, athletic facilities and parking, the Academy says.

Sussex Academy's mission is to prepare all its students for acceptance and success at top tier universities through a rigorous and challenging academic experience.
