LAUREL, Md. (AP) - Police say a man fatally shot a man who was dating his estranged wife before shooting and wounding himself in Laurel.

The fatal shooting and suicide attempt occurred around 10:40 Wednesday night. Anne Arundel County police say the wife of 39-year-old Robert Mendiola had separated from him last month and taken out a protective order against him.

Police say Mendiola approached his wife and 39-year-old Howard Popp as they sat in a car in a residential neighborhood. The pair left the car, and police say Mendiola shot Popp several times, killing him. Police say Mendiola then went to a nearby shed where he shot himself.

Police say Mendiola remained hospitalized Thursday morning with life-threatening injuries. He faces charges including first-degree murder.
