Wicomico County School System Changes Technology Policy

Posted:
SALISBURY, Md.- As the new school year begins, Wicomico County is making changes to its cell phone policy in hopes of enhancing learning and cutting down on discipline issues.

The Wicomico County Public School system updated its "Acceptable Use of Technology Policy" this July.  The new rules will allow the use of personal electronic devices, such as cell phones and tablets, for instruction in secondary classrooms.  They will only be used at the discretion of the teacher and with permission of the parents.

Students will also be allowed to have cell phones outside of the classroom in all middle and high schools, but they must be in silent mode and follow school guidelines for when and where they can be used during the day.

The Wicomico County Public School system will not allow cell phone and tablet use in elementary classrooms, but if parents want their child to have a cell phone for safety reasons they can seek permission from the principal.

The Wicomico County Board of Education says it hopes that as instruction is enhanced under the new policy, discipline issues related to cell phone use in schools will decrease. They say administrators and teachers have been spending hundreds of hours on cell phone referrals, most of which will not occur under the new rules.
