WINCHESTER, Va. (AP)- A bear that attacked a Virginia man in West Virginia has eluded attempts to capture it.

Colin Carpenter with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources says on Monday that removed traps set for the female bear last Friday.

According to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the bear attacked 59-year-old Steven Krichbaum of Staunton, Virginia, after his dog went after her two cubs. Krichbaum and the dog escaped when he hit the bear with a rock.

The attack occurred Thursday in the George Washington National Forest in Hardy County. Krichbaum drove to a market in Frederick County, Virginia, and was taken to a hospital. Officials with the hospital said Monday that Krichbaum had been discharged but couldn't say when.
