Salisbury Field Hockey Ranked No. 2 to Begin 2014 Season
CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Salisbury University field hockey team will begin the 2014 season this Friday, and it will do so as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association revealed the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll on Tuesday.
Salisbury, which advanced to the national championship game in 2013, received a pair of first-place votes and 794 points to sit in second behind defending national champion Bowdoin College, which picked up 37 first-place votes and 842 points.
Montclair State University (662 points and two first-place votes), Christopher Newport University (653 points and one first-place vote), and Middlebury College (652 points) round out the top five. The College of New Jersey, which ranks 11th, with 334 points, received the final first-place vote.
The Sea Gulls, who finished last year with a 17-4 record, will face six teams this season ranked in the preseason top 20. Along with Christopher Newport, the Capital Athletic Conference is also represented by the University of Mary Washington, which is ranked 16th entering the year.
