Mother Arrested After Leaving Autistic Son Alone in Car

Posted:
SMYRNA, Del.- Officers from the Smyrna Police Department arrested a mother Wednesday in the parking lot of the Smyrna Mart Shopping Center near the Acme after they say she left her five-year-old autistic son in the car without any supervision.

Police say they responded to the shopping center at 5:07 p.m. after a report of the child being left in the car. Police say several witnesses advised the child had been alone without any parent or guardian for approximately 20 minutes. Police officers were forced to enter the car to check on the child.

Police arrested 37-year-old Inga Gillett-Spio, of Smyrna. Police say she is charged with one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and was released on $1,000.00 unsecured bail.

Officers contacted the Delaware Division of Family Services regarding this investigation.
