Shorebirds' Season Closes On High Note

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds finished the 2014 season with a 5-3 victory over the Hickory Crawdads on Labor Day Monday. Meanwhile, Chance Sisco clinched the league batting title with a franchise-record .340 average, the first ever Shorebird to win the batting crown.

Hickory got out to an early lead with three runs off Janser Severino in the third inning. The Crawdads scored on a bases loaded walk, followed by a bases loaded hit by pitch. Jairo Beras beat out a double play ball to score another run, making it 3-0 Hickory.

Delmarva inched their way back into the game, starting in the bottom of the third. Anthony Caronia doubled down the left field line to set up an RBI single for Jared Breen. In the fourth, Tanner Murphy launched his first professional home run, a solo blast to cut the Crawdads' lead down to one run. The Shorebirds tied it up at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly by Breen in the fifth.

The Shorebirds took charge in the seventh inning, breaking the deadlock. Anthony Vega led off with a single, and then promptly stole second base. Oswill Lartiguez collected his first RBI as a Shorebird with a single into center, scoring Vega. Lartiguez later scored on an RBI double by Breen, who finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs on the day.

Nik Nowottnick and Derrick Bleeker locked down the victory, combining for three perfect innings in relief. Nowottnick earned his first win as a Shorebird, while Bleeker recorded his first save with Delmarva by striking out five of the six batters he faced. Scott Williams settled for the defeat for Hickory.

The Shorebirds finished the 2014 season with a 66-73 record, the most wins since 2009. Delmarva saw several franchise records set, including seven midseason All-Star selections. Drew Dosch passed his manager Ryan Minor for the most hits by a Shorebird in a single season with 157 base hits. Chance Sisco won the South Atlantic League batting title with a Shorebirds' record .340 batting average.

Delmarva will return to action on Opening Night in 2015, April 9th at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium when they host the Greensboro Grasshoppers. For more information, please contact the Shorebirds' front office at 410-219-3112.
