Warrior Beach Week Kicks off in Bethany

BETHANY BEACH, Del. - Warrior Beach Week started Tuesday. It is a week long opportunity for wounded veterans to relax and enjoy the beach.

The program is organized by non-profit group Operation Seas The Day. Richard Katon is one of the founders. He started the program in 2013 to honor American soldiers. He said the purpose is not only to thank our wounded veterans, but also to help them reintegrate into civilian life.

"One of the wives said her husband came back as a shell of the person he was and in the past year he has come out of his shell and is her husband again," he said. "Hearing things like that is overwhelmingly satisfying."

The first year, 25 host families participated. This year it increased to 35.

Army Sergeant Dale Fishgrab is one of the veteran's participating this year. He and his wife and two kids (and service dog Gunner) said they are excited to be a part of the program, and have already made incredible memories.

"It's just overwhelming, trying not to break down and see everybody's gratitude towards my family," he explained. "It's just mind boggling how everybody is very supportive and giving."

Sergeant Fishgrab's host is Mary Beth Murray. She comes from a military family herself and said this program has changed her life.

"I cant thank him enough and what he's lost through it," she said. "But now with programs like this he's gaining so much more and it rocks."

The program includes activities such as paddle boarding horseback riding and a spa day. It comes to a close Sunday with a farewell breakfast. All of the activities and hosts are through donations and volunteers.
