Suspect in Triple Fatal DUI Crash Assaulted in Jail

KELLER, Va.(AP/WBOC) - Police say the man suspected of killing three people in a drinking and driving accident in Accomack County was assaulted in jail.

According to Sheriff Todd Godwin, 36-year-old Bonifilio Velazquez was assaulted by his cell mates at the Accomack County Jail on Monday.

Godwin says Velazquez is currently being treated at a medical facility and is listed in stable condition.  Sheriff Godwin stated that no further information on the assault is available at this time.

A Virginia State police spokeswoman says a van driven by Velazquez crossed the center line of U.S. Route 13 near Keller in Accomack County and hit a car shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday.
The car's driver and two passengers died at the scene. The driver was 58-year-old Arnette N. Chandler of Roosevelt, New York. The passengers were 55-year-old Diann W. Jones of Exmore and 12-year-old A'Jamae Jones.

Three other children who were passengers in the car were injured.

Velazquez faces involuntary manslaughter and drinking and driving charges related to the accident.
