Va. Climate Change Focus of Panel's Meeting

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Terry McAuliffe's climate change commission is gathering in Richmond for its inaugural meeting.

Created this summer, the Climate Change and Resiliency Commission will hear Wednesday afternoon from McAuliffe. The panel will also receive a report that outlines a number of recommendations aimed at sparing Virginia the full impact of rising seas.

The state's coastal region is especially vulnerable.

McAuliffe's creation of the climate change panel actually resurrected an effort that had lain dormant for years. He has said Virginia could be a leader in the U.S. in dealing with the threat of rising seas.

The commission is chaired by McAuliffe Cabinet secretaries. Its membership totals more than 30.

A report is expected next summer.
