DOVER, Del.– Punkin Chunkin has a new home, after months of searching and uncertainty, according to its new host.

Dover International Speedway announced Thursday that it reached an agreement to become the new host site for the annual event.

“We're excited to bring a world renowned event like Punkin Chunkin to Dover International Speedway,” Mike Tatoian said, executive vice president and COO of Dover Motorsports, Inc. “Their event and incredible fan base, teamed with our infrastructure and experience with hosting large-scale events should make for a terrific event this fall and subsequent years.”

Tatoian said the speedway offers an ideal location for the popular event, and he is happy to keep it in Delaware.

“We hope that by keeping this distinctly Delaware event in Delaware we will attract a number of new fans from the north, allowing us to make Punkin Chunkin bigger and better than ever,” Tatoian said.

Punkin Chunkin organizers scouted more than 50 locations in and out of Delaware, according to the speedway.

Though the event will stay in Delaware, it switched counties, leaving Bridgeville in Sussex County for its new venue in Kent County.

Punkin Chunkin has been held each year in Delaware since 1986, and sees teams from around the world compete in the sport of hurling a pumpkin solely by mechanical means for distance.

The new event host says it will take place on the same grounds used to host the Firefly Music Festival.

In a press release, Dover International Speedway said for the seventh consecutive year, Science Channel will be on hand capturing every moment of Punkin Chunkin. The action will premiere on the Science Channel Saturday, Nov. 29 from 8-10 p.m.

The speedway said the non-profit event gives out scholarships to students each year.

This year's 28th World Championship Punkin Chunkin event will be held Oct. 24-26, according to the speedway.
