Community Remembers Fallen Officer

Posted:

LEWES, Del. - Seventy-five years has not weakened June Rose Futcher's love for her grandfather. It was all those years before in 1939 that her grandfather Charles Wilson Futcher Senior was killed in the line of duty as a Lewes police officer.

Although June Rose never met her grandfather, the stories along with a steady dose of love, fueled her to take action to commemorate his life.

On Monday afternoon, dozens of community members gathered at the Zwaanendael Park in Lewes to celebrate Futcher's life. The Delaware House and Senate presented official declarations honoring his sacrifice as well. In front of dozens of police officers, June Rose then unveiled a new plaque which will commemorate her grandfather at that park.

"He gave his life," she said. "And because he gave his life, we missed the opportunity to know and love him as our grandfather. But also the loss that my father and my aunt suffered. They were just teenagers."

Futcher is the only Lewes police officer to ever lose his life in the line of duty. He was also the Sussex County constable. His life has already been commemorated with national and regional recognitions, but June Rose said this was substantial because it finally brought his legacy "home."

"We're from here," she said. "And our families go back many, many generations. And people knew about his loss here, but it wasn't shared. And I knew it was time to bring him back to share with the community and our family and our friends. So he's here where he gave his life for his community."
