DOVER, Del.– Dover police say they have charged a man with the theft of a significant amount of heavy-duty, high-voltage copper wire from the Dover Power Plant over the course of 20 months.

Evidence at the previous home of Michael W. Shane Sr., 46, of Clayton, linked him to the crime, police said.

According to officers, between November 2012 and July 2014, approximately 1,000 feet of wire was stolen from a warehouse on the property of the McKee Run Generating Station, which belongs to the City of Dover Electric Department.

Through an ongoing investigation, police said they determined Shane had scraped nearly 11,000 pounds of copper wiring and received $30,000 for its sale at the Dover Scrap Yard.

Shane was charged with theft under $50,000 and released on $5,000 unsecured bond.
