ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Va. – The Assateague Island National Seashore says there has been another wild horse hit by a car.

It happened after 10 p.m. Monday.

The Assateague Island National Seashore reported on its Facebook page that a driver witnessed a horse being hit by a small sports car on the causeway from the bridge to the island. They write that the sports car left the scene and the witness called 911 to report it.

According to the witness, the horse fell down but got back up and walked away. Assateague officials believe the horse that was struck was N2BHS-CK, also known as Johnny's Star.

Chief Ranger Ted Morlock says there is an investigation pending as police look for the sports car that struck the horse. He said the witness gave a generic description of the car and there are no tags for investigators to use to identify the car.

After the horse was struck, Assateague officials said officers went to the scene and searched the area for an injured horse, but did not find one. On Tuesday morning, Assateague accounted for and assessed the health of all the horses in the area and found that none appeared to be injured.

Morlock said there has been two other horse-vehicle collisions this year, in one of those cases a horse was injured.

The Assateague Island National Seashore said since 1982, 29 horses have been killed by cars.

Officials ask drivers to drive below the posted speed limit when approaching horses and other wildlife in or on the side of the road.
