County Stadium Field to be Renamed After Legendary Coach

Posted: Updated:
SALISBURY, Md. -  For the last nine years a group of former Wicomico High School players, students, and teachers have been working to honor one of the school's and Delmarva's legendary coaches.  His name was Charlie Berry.  For 39 years he served in Wicomico County Public Schools. First as a math teacher and football coach, and later as the county's first ever director of athletics.

On Friday night before the Parkside and James M. Bennett football game at Wicomico County Stadium, that group will honor Berry during a renaming ceremony.  The football field that Coach Berry spearheaded and helped to build back in 1961 will now be known as Charlie Berry Field at Wicomico County Stadium.

One of Berry's former football players is long time Wi-Hi Boys Basketball Coach Butch Waller, "he had hands on from start to finish getting this field done. And when I say hands on, not only the field but the bleachers they got from War Memorial Stadium, the press box, and he mowed this field with a push mower. He loved this place.", added Waller.

Waller says this project has been nine years in the making, and didn't cost the county any money. All funds were raised by the group to pay for the sign, and there is money in an account to maintain it in the future.

Unfortunately, the former four-sport coach won't be on hand to see his name displayed on the field he helped build. Berry passed away four years ago at the age of 96.  But his work in Wicomico County will never be forgotten. Especially his work on one particular spot that lights up every friday night each and every fall. A place called Charlie Berry Field at Wicomico County Stadium.
