Navy to Implement More Interactive Training of Sexual Assault

NORFOLK,Va.(AP) - The Navy is changing the way it trains its sailors in matters regarding sexual assault. Rather than a typical PowerPoint presentation, this fall the Navy will begin a new training program that is more interactive and hands-on.

The hope is that, with this new form of training, sailors will be more engaged in the lessons being taught.

A heightened focus of the training will be on bystander intervention, which leaders believe is a major component to stemming the tide of sexual assaults that have been an issue for military leaders for years.

The Navy says it knows many of the assaults stem from alcohol use. They want their sailors to step in and stop the chain of events when they see something is headed in a bad direction.

The Navy says each sailor will be required to complete the more interactive training by September 2015.
