Update: Princess Anne Town Commissioner Charged with Assault

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- Princess Anne Town Commissioner Lionel D. Frederick has been released on a $10,000 bond after being arrested over the weekend on assault charges. 

Maryland State Police said Frederick's arrest stemmed from an incident that occurred Saturday. According to police, Frederick went to 24-year-old Marquis Cotton's home on the 30000 block of Hampden Avenue in Princess Anne and attacked him with mace in his front yard. Investigators said Cotton also alleged that Frederick drove his van into his yard and struck him with it.

"While I got hit, I jumped to prevent injuries," Cotton said.

According to a police report, the assault followed an argument between Frederick and his girlfriend Kiera White, who lives next door to Cotton. The report said a man named Dubey intervened. A separate argument broke out and ended with a rock being thrown at Frederick's minivan. Frederick pulled up to Cotton, used an expletive and then spit in his face, according to court documents.

"I was trying to talk to him man-to-man, and as I approached his vehicle, he maced me," Cotton said.

Troopers said Cotton refused medical treatment at the scene.

Cotton said he used a baseball bat to knock out Frederick's windshield after the attack.

Frederick's attorney addressed the allegations.

"My client is innocent,"  Attorney R. Hardy Rudasill said. " He is with his family, and this is all the comment we have on the matter." 

Other town commissioners would not comment, but residents like Bradford Tilghman did not hold back their thoughts.

"I couldn't believe it; I know something must have happened, " Tilghman said. "I don't think we should pass judgement until everything is over with."

Frederick was charged with first- and second-degree assault.  A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 17. 

Police said the investigation into the alleged incident is ongoing and troopers continue to interview witnesses.

Frederick, 23, is a University of Maryland Eastern Shore student who was elected to the Princess Anne Town Commission in June, beating incumbent Jay Parker for the at-large seat.
