Beekeeping Opportunity Available For Delaware Veteran

Posted:
DOVER, Del. – A Delaware military veteran will be selected for a spring beekeeping endeavor in New Castle.

The Planting Hope with Honey Bees project will provide all the needed equipment and training to the veteran, according to the Delaware Department of Agriculture.  Hives will be at the Planting Hope in Delaware gardens on the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services' Herman Holloway Campus.

“Beekeeping can be a rewarding and fascinating endeavor, but challenging and expensive for new participants,” said President of Delaware Beekeepers Association Ken Outten.  “We want to provide the opportunity for someone to get involved while honoring our veterans' service.”

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 15 from veterans of all branches, including the National Guard and Reserves.  The department said a recipient will be picked before the end of 2014.

The opportunity is through a partnership between the Delaware Beekeepers Association, University of Delaware Cooperative Extension and the Delaware Department of Agriculture.
