$90K Awarded to Volunteer Fire Departments in Maryland

Posted: Updated:
MARYLAND- The Maryland Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday announced $90,000 worth of grants have been awarded to volunteer fire departments across the state.

The funding comes in the form of volunteer fire assistance grants and will be dispersed to 39 volunteer fire departments in 15 Maryland counties. The $90,000 will help provide the resources needed to better fight wildfires in rural communities.

“With volunteer fire assistance grants we are able to help afford these hardworking men and women the tools and safety equipment to enhance response efforts,” said DNR State Fire Supervisor Monte Mitchell. “This funding helps to protect our natural resources, homes and property, and the lives of these selfless workers and our citizens.”

This year's grants will help provide wildland personal protective gear, Class A foam and upgraded radio communications equipment. The funds will also go toward supplying departments with equipment for brush trucks and fire engines and other tools to enhance wildfire suppression, and replacing small diameter fire hose.

The USDA Forest Service provided grant funds to the 39 recipients for $90,021 in DNR matching funding to complete the $187,652 in total project cost.
