Farmers Prepare for Fall Crops

Posted:

CAMDEN-WYOMING, Del.- The days are getting cooler and nights are arriving earlier. Fall is officially here. With the fall season, farmers across Delmarva are preparing for those fall favorites like pumpkins and apples.

Michael Fennemore from Fifer Orchards say he is excited about this year's harvest.

"We're very optimistic about a good fall season for our crops," said Fennemore.

But unusual weather has given the harvest an interesting twist. Officials from the University of Delaware College of Agriculture and Natural Resources say fall crops like corn are a bit behind because of the weather.

"You're at the mercy of the weather conditions," explained Fennemore. "We would have liked to have sweet corn another week ahead of when we could get it, but you're really limited to the soil temperatures and the conditions to get the seed generated and sprouted."

Despite the unpredictable weather, Fennemore and his family continue to work hard to keep their crops up to speed.

"A lot of the spring and summer crops were delayed," said Fennemore. "But once they did come on the quality was good and we had a good harvest and that's lead right into the fall with pumpkins and apples everything looks great."

The fall crops are out and ready. The harvest is looking good right now for some farmers, but Fennemore says he knows that anything can happen.

"As we know in agriculture, you take it one day at a time," said Fennemore. "Weather conditions change quickly and we just don't count our chickens before they're hatched."

There's no telling what the rest of the fall season will bring. Fennemore hopes it will continue to be a good one."

Fifer Orchards will be showcasing their fall crops and other fall activities with its Fall Fest. That will continue everyday except Sundays until November 1st.
