Talbot Board of Education Considers Options With Easton Elementary

EASTON, Md.- Two elementary schools, side by side.  Not a common sight, but it has been the system parents and teachers in Easton have gotten used to.

But these two buildings have seen better days.

Gayle Secrist with the Talbot County Board of Education, says the price tag for rehabbing these schools is big, but necessary.

"To totally renovate both buildings, a combination of state and local funds was 27,393,000 approximately," said Secrist.

But that's only one option.  although the board of ed is leaning towards the idea of keeping both schools intact, some parents believe this is the perfect chance to eliminate the inconvenience of two schools and bring it all under one roof.

"I've got kids who have been through both schools and are now in the Moton building.  It's harder for the parents to jump back between the two different schools because you have to pick up a child at one and then shoot over to the other and I think it's a lot easier to have them consolidate it," said Doug Kirby.
Kirby says it also simplifies the system by making it so the schools only need one administration.  The price on that option according to the board is $30 million to expand one of the schools and renovate.  That doesn't include the cost of demolishing the other.

The board says keeping both intact seems to be wiser.

"From an educational standpoint we believe that two buildings would probably be the better educational solution," said Secrist.

Allowing for both a primary and intermediate school at Easton Elementary.
