Dewey Police Arrest Driver After Pursuit and Crash


 DEWEY BEACH, Del. – The Dewey Beach Police Department have arrested a 19-year-old Harrington man after he drove away from police attempting to stop him on Coastal Highway Saturday.

Police initiated a motor vehicle stop on Coastal Highway in the area of St. Louis street. As the officers approached the car, the driver, John Gleysteen, 19, of Harrington, drove north on Coastal Highway. The officers followed Gleysteen's vehicle for approximately two miles when it turned onto Oyster House Road in Rehoboth Beach. Police said the vehicle accelerated to approximately 50 mph and failed to negotiate a turn in the area o the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Bridge. Police said the vehicle continued into a wooded area and hit a tree approximately 10 yards from the canal bank.

Gleysteen, along with a 20-year-old passenger, were extricated from the vehicle by Rehoboth Beach Fire Department and transported to Beebe Medical Center for minor injuries. The passenger was not charged.

Gleysteen was found to have four active warrants out of Kent County. He was charged with DUI, felony failure to stop at the command of a police officer, reckless driving, aggressive driving, general speed restriction, suspended/revoked driver's license, failure to signal, failure to use headlamps and fictitious registration.
