New Castle Man Arrested After Attempted Armed Robbery

NEW CASTLE, De. - Delaware State Police Robbery Unit detectives arrested a New Castle man after the attempted armed robbery of a pharmacy Saturday morning. Police say 46 year-old Richard E. Weddington went into the Rite Aid Pharmacy on New Castle Avenue armed with a large knife. Weddington allegedly approached a 57 year-old female clerk with a note demanding cash. The clerk retreated to an office and called 911. Weddington fled without the money. Troopers received a full description of the suspect and captured Weddington a short time later running down Landers Lane.

Weddington was taken into custody without incident. He is charged with Attempted Robbery 1st degree, Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited. He was arraigned at JP Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution for lack of $36,500 cash bail.
