MILFORD, Del.– A Dover man is behind bars following accusations that he kidnapped his infant son from a home in the Silver Lake Estates neighborhood in Milford, police said.

Sawndale Auguste, 20, is being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution, and his 11-month-old child is safe with his mother, according to Milford police.

Police said they responded to a report of a burglary shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday at Silver Lakes Estates, when they were notified that Auguste was fleeing on foot with his son. Police said an investigation revealed he had damaged an exterior window in order to enter the home. According to officers, Auguste took the child and ran after an argument with the boy's mother. Police said Auguste threatened to punch an onlooker who confronted him about returning the child.

Officers located Auguste shortly after arriving at the home and took him into custody without incident.

Auguste was charged with kidnapping, burglary, assault and endangering the welfare of a child, among other offenses.

His bail is set at $54,600, and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Friday at the Kent County Court of Common Pleas.
