HARBESON, Del. (WBOC)- Delaware state police have charged a man with driving under the influence of heroin after crashing head-on with troopers near Harbeson yesterday afternoon.

The state police Collision Resconstruction Unit is investigating the crash between a Delaware State Police car and a truck that happened on Beaver Dam Road just north of Indian Mission Road at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.

Troopers said a 23-year-old female trooper was driving a fully marked 2008 Ford Crown Victoria northbound on Beaver Dam Road when Robert C. Rickrode II, 28 of Millsboro, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado southbound approaching a moderate right curve in the road. They said the pick-up truck failed to negotiate the turn and crossed the center line, entering the northbound lanes and into the travel path of the cruiser.

Police said the female trooper attempted to avoid the crash by swerving to the right, but was struck in the right front of the car by the right front of the truck. After the impact, the Silverado rolled onto its side and landed upright on the east side of the road, while the police car came to a stop.

Police said the female trooper and a 28-year-old male trooper seated in the front passenger's seat were both wearing seatbelts and taken by EMS to Beebe Medical Center where they were treated and released with minor non-life-threatening injuries.

According to troopers, Rickrode was not properly restrained and was transported to Beebe Medical Center where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries. He was then taken to Troop 7 by state police where he was charged with two counts of vehicular assault 2nd, driving under the influence of a drug (heroin), inattentive driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no proof of insurance. He was arraigned at JP3 and committed to Sussex Correction Institution on $10,000 cash bond.

Beaver Dam Road was closed for approximately two and a half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
