Woman Dies After Delaware Crash

NEWARK, Del. (AP) - A passenger in a car that was struck by two men fleeing a Delaware State Police trooper has died from her injuries.

Delaware State Police say 53 -year-old Mary Smith died on Friday in Newark, one day after two men fleeing a state trooper struck the car she was riding in. Smith and the driver of the car, 55-year-old Martin Spencer, were taken to the hospital.

Police say 32-year-old Stephen Jefferis and his passenger fled from a state trooper after the officer observed him shooting heroin inside the car.

Prior to Smith's death Jefferis was charged with assault, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and other traffic offenses. The Delaware State police say the charges could be upgraded as a result of Smith's death.
