NATO Military Committee Officials Meet in Va.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Members of NATO's military committee are in Virginia getting an update from the alliance's only command in North America.

Officials from the military committee are visiting NATO's Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The committee's visit to the command occurs once a year. The Norfolk-based command serves as a type of think tank for the alliance and looks for ways to address current and emerging threats impacting the 28-nation alliance.

NATO says the discussions the military committee is having are classified. But topics include the alliance's plans to create a rapid-reaction force that could deploy several thousand allied combat troops on short notice anywhere in eastern Europe.

Details of the force will be worked out in February at a NATO ministerial meeting.
