Laurel Residents Have Concerns Over Abandoned Homes

LAUREL, Del. (WBOC) - A homeowner on East Sixth Street in Laurel has joined the discussion over what to do with abandoned properties in the town.

Fred Adams brought his concerns to the council meeting Monday night about boarded up homes and rental properties that he said are not up to standard in the town.

Adams told WBOC his wife filed a formal complaint against one of the homes across the street Tuesday night.

The town has been discussing a proposed ordinance that would limit the number of days abandoned homes could have boards on the windows and doors. Pine Street homeowner MaryAnne Rivas originally brought up the issue to the council. So far no action has been taken pending further discussion at the Oct. 20 meeting.

"I think landlords should have to at least bring their properties up to the minimum standards of others in the neighborhood," said Adams. "I know there's going to be some neighborhoods that are a little less maintained than ours, but if you come to this neighborhood, you should make your homes look as good as the rest of them."
