DELMAR, Md. - Several properties in Delmar are dealing with a bamboo problem.

Town leaders are discussing a possible ordinance that would keep the plant from spreading in the future.

There are several properties on East State Street with bamboo, including a doctor's office at the end of the street and an abandoned home on the 700 block.

Timothy Engle lives across the street form one of the homes. He said the neighbors have asked him for help cutting down the plant.

"Summer before last I cut all of it down out of that yard and by the end of the season it started coming back," said Engle.

Delmar Town Manager Sara Bynum-King said there are ways to keep bamboo out like containing it in concrete barriers. As far as what to do with the bamboo that is already there, no decision has been made.

"You gotta catch it before it gets too tall," said Engle.

Ethan Coffey of Parsonsburg works for a landscaping company and was doing a job in Delmar.

"It does grow like crazy," said Coffey. "

"It does grow like crazy," said Ethan Coffey of Parsonsburg.  "It's something we definitely should start looking into. Not everybody wants bamboo that takes care of their lawns and what not growing everywhere."

Engle said he thinks bamboo will remain an issue, even if there is an ordinance put in place.

"I think it's gonna spread no matter what you're going to do because I've cut it down once like I said, and the problem's been it just grows right back the following summer," said Engle.

King said the discussion of bamboo at town meetings has snowballed to include other invasive plants as well. She said the discussion will continue and they're not sure when an ordinance will be drafted.
