Wilmington Police Launch Homicide Unit

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington police are launching a homicide unit as the city's unsolved murders mount.

The unit comes as Wilmington residents and community groups have complained about the city's rising gun violence and a number of unsolved killings.

Mayor Dennis Williams said on Tuesday that a team of four veteran officers and a supervisor will make up the unit, which will get supplemental help from the federal government.

He says the unit, set to launch Oct. 20, wasn't created sooner because he wanted to "get it right."

Wilmington has seen 21 people killed this year, with an arrest in only one of those cases.

City officials say a homicide unit will be critical in solving murders and possibly help prevent future ones.
