Obama to Campaign for Dems in Maryland, Illinois

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is stepping up his efforts to help Democrats competing in the midterms with planned public campaign appearances in Maryland and Illinois.

The White House says Obama will appear on Sunday with Anthony Brown, the Democrat running to be Maryland's next governor. He'll also hold a public event later Sunday with Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, who is running for re-election.

Most Democrats have been wary of appearing in public with Obama because his sagging approval ratings could make him a political liability. Obama has held dozens of fundraisers for Democrats behind closed doors, but these are only the second and third major campaign events for Obama so far this year.

On Wednesday, Obama will hold his first campaign rally of the season with Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy.
