Special Olympics Md. to Host State Golf Championship

QUEENSTOWN, Md.- Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) announced it will host the 2014 State Golf Championship on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Queenstown Harbor, one of the premier golf clubs on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Close to 300 athletes and Unified Partners from across the state will compete in both traditional and Unified competitions, including:

· Level I Individual Skills Competition

· Level II 9-hole Unified Competition Alternate Shot Stroke Play

· Level III 18-hole Unified Competition Alternate Shot Stroke Play

· Level IV 9-hole Individual Athlete Competition Stroke Play

· Level V 18-hole Individual Athlete Competition Stroke Play

Opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m., and the competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. at Queenstown Harbor, located at 310 Links Lane in Queenstown.

Unified Sports® and Unified Partner Competitions provide a means to bring together athletes with and without disabilities in a fulfilling and fun inclusion experience. Unified Sports® teams are composed of a proportional number of athletes with intellectual and other types of disabilities, and athletes without disabilities who train and compete together on the same team.

Special Olympics Maryland (SOMD) is a year-round sports organization dedicated to providing quality sports training and competition opportunities to Maryland's children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or closely related development disabilities. SOMD currently provides thousands of sports experiences annually for athletes statewide, and offers 24 sports, all at no cost to the athletes or their families.     Police say the five people killed Friday in a crash on a Delaware highway were a 61-year-old father from New Jersey and his four daughters. Delaware State Police on Saturday did not release the names of those killed, but they did say the New Jersey family was from the town of Teaneck and the daughters included a 20-year-old, a 17-year-old and two 13-year-olds. The 53-year-old mother was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
