PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- Two cross country runners, freshman Nelson Kimutai (Eldoret, Kenya) and sophomore Barbora Blahutova (Slavkov, Czech Republic) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on Oct. 20.
Kimutai is being named for the first time as a Hawk, while Blahutova is being named for the third time.
In the men's 8k race Kimutai averaged a 5:23 mile en route to a 26:45.8 finish, good for first place out of 51 competitors. For Nelson, the victory was the first of his collegiate career after four straight second place finishes earlier this season. Blahutova ran the 5k women's race at a clip of 18:33.7, fast enough for her fourth straight victory. Furthermore, the win kept Blahutova undefeated in her UMES career.
Additionally, both the men's and women's teams earned victory. So far this fall the men have not lost a race, winning five of five, while the women have earned three wins in a row.
The MEAC Cross Country Championships await the Hawks next, taking place on November 1st in Smyrna, Delaware.
