Arson Blamed for Hoopers Island Barn Fire

HOOPERS ISLAND, Md. – State fire officials say a Sunday night barn fire on Hoopers Island in Dorchester County was intentionally set.

According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, a passerby discovered the fire in a wood-framed 20-foot by 20-foot barn at 2020 Hoopersville Road and contacted authorities.

Crews from Hoopers Island, Church Creek, Madison, Lakes & Straights, Taylors Island and Rescue fire companies responded just before 10 p.m. It took 50 firefighters an hour to put out the fire, the state fire marshal said.

There were no reported injuries but the barn and its contents sustained $8,000 and $500 worth of damages, respectively.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Lower Eastern Regional Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal at (410) 713-3780.
