Wico. Voter Reports Problem at the Ballot Box

Posted:
SALISBURY, Md. - An early voter in Wicomico County had difficulty with a touch screen voting machine, claiming the machine was changing the vote she was trying to cast.

Anthony Gutierrez, the Election Director for Wicomico County confirmed the incident that took place on Sunday morning at the early voting location at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center.  Gutierrez said a woman attempted to cast a vote for a candidate and the machine selected that candidate's opponent.  The voter called for the help of election judges, attempted to select the candidate again and got the same result.  Eventually, according to Gutierrez, the voter proceeded to the "summary screen" on the voting machine and the candidate she wanted to vote for was selected and the correct vote was cast.

Gutierrez said two election officials then cast their own personal votes on the machine and had no issues.  The next five voters using the machine also reported no issues. The election director said the machine will continue to be closely monitored and if another issue occurs with that particular voting machine, it will be removed from use.

Gutierrez went on to say the voter immediately alerting the election judges was the correct thing to do in that situation.

"I'd say that after an election, three or four times I will get reports, either an email or a phone call indicating someone had a problem.  And it is unfortunate because at that point, there is nothing we can do for them," Gutierrez said.

Voters in Wicomico County can vote early at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center until October 30th at 8pm.
