Dover Air Force Base Prepares for Ebola

Posted:

DOVER, Del. - The Dover Air Force Base is preparing personnel for an Ebola threat as they support Operation united Assistance; America's plan to provide medical support and security to West Africa.

According to a press release, personnel are not currently being sent to active Ebola zones, but just a few days ago there was a mission with a staging area near an affected location. Therefore, in the unlikely case of contact with the virus, base officials have developed a plan.

For their new protocol, all Dover Air Force Base personnel will have personal protective equipment kits on each mission and are going through rigorous training to handle any possible Ebola threat in flight.
According to Colonel Michael Grismer, 436th Airlift Wing Commander, the base is "taking all the necessary steps and implementing protocols to minimize potential risks to any and all personnel when called to support the OUA mission."

Governor Jack Markell spoke this week about 11 people in Delaware being monitored with Ebola-like symptoms. At the press conference, Dr. Karyl Rattay, the director of the Division of Public Health talked about the importance of working with the Air Force Base.

"We have been working with Dover Air Force base for probably about three months or so on the possibility of having somebody come into our state," she explained. "We have not had anyone who has come into our state and come onto the Delaware ground yet from one of these three countries that does need to be monitored but we will work with the air force base for the samemonitoringg program that anyone else would follow."

According to Air Force officials, in the event that military personnel are exposed to the virus, they will receive "world class medical care."
