Wicomico County Humane Society Hopes to Dispel Black Cat Stigma

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md.- There is a bit of a stigma when it comes to black cats, and the Wicomico County Humane Society wants to change that. In the spirit of Halloween, the Humane Society offered a “treat" to those looking to adopt -- a discounted fee on black and orange cats and kittens.

Executive Director David Fitzgerald said this kind of incentive helps place animals in loving homes.

“Black cats, by superstition or whatever, are very hard to adopt in the shelter environment, so we try to offer, any time we can offer a special on black cats, we try to do that,” Fitzgerald explained. “So we're just tying it to the Halloween theme, and as always, we're very cautious with our adoption applications so we don't have any issues with people trying to adopt and do something bad to the cats for some sort of Halloween ritual.”

The Humane Society will be celebrating Black Friday a week early with "Black (Cat) Friday" on Nov. 21st. Adoption fees will be $25, and include the first set of shots, worming, flea preventative, feline leukemia/FIV test, spay/neutering, rabies vaccination and a microchip.
