AAA Offers Tips For Winter-Ready Vehicles

Posted:

WILMINGTON, Del. – Above-average November temperatures are about to give way to a quick cool down, and AAA Mid-Atlantic wants to make sure motorists are ready.

In addition to performing regular checks themselves, AAA recommends drivers have their vehicles checked by a trusted mechanic, to stay safe and prevent future expensive repairs.

“We won't soon forget last winter's treacherous conditions, from double-digit snowfalls to ice storms, we saw motorists stranded throughout the region, some unnecessarily,” said Jim Lardear, the director of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “AAA hopes this threat of winter weather serves as a reminder for motorists to have their vehicles serviced for winter driving now. Preventative maintenance now can keep you safe on the roadways this winter, as well as save time and money in the long run.”

Especially important are battery and tire inspections, as cold temperatures can take a toll on these parts. According to Lardear, AAA responded to more than 27,000 emergency roadside calls last winter in Delaware, up 16.6 percent from the previous winter.

“While some breakdowns are unavoidable, there are some that could have been prevented with proper vehicle maintenance ahead of harsh winter weather,” he said. “Batteries and tires typically top the list of winter repairs, both of which can be checked ahead of time.”

Some steps motorists can take to ensure winter readiness include:

  • Getting a checkup
  • Testing the battery
  • Checking the oil and filter
  • Keeping it clean
  • Packing an emergency kit containing a fully charged cell phone and charger; ice scraper; shovel; jumper cables; kitty litter, sand or salt; flashlight; blanket; drinking water; and a high-protein snack
