Hurlock Considers Switching to Natural Gas

Posted:
HURLOCK, Md.- The fall colors are here.  Leaves cover the ground.  A sure sign winter is on the way, and with it, high electric bills or high oil bills for people living in the small town of Hurlock.

But a group of citizens calling themselves the Hurlock Citizens and Seniors Association hope to lessen that blow in the future by tapping in to a natural gas pipeline running through the heart of town.

"Gas would be considerably cheaper than other utilities such as electric or oil.  People could potentially save 50 percent of their heating costs," said Pat Finley, a member of the group.

The group says this pipeline next to the railroad is an unused resource that's been sitting here waiting to be used since 1860.

Chesapeake Utilities says two industrial businesses in Hurlock, Amick Farms and B&G Foods use natural gas from that pipeline.  They say installing the infrastructure throughout the town would be more difficult in the established neighborhoods than it would be in a newer development.

That has some potential customers like Charles Elbert concerned about where the money for that work would come from.

"For me I don't see where it could really be anything but more expense and me being on a fixed income, I can't afford any more expenses," said Elbert.

But he says if the infrastructure can be installed with state or federal money, with low impact to the consumer, natural gas is an idea he could get behind.

    Florence Impacts Delaware Beaches

As Hurricane Florence dies down, Delaware's beaches are feeling some lingering impacts from the powerful storm.

In Rehoboth Beach, Beach Patrol Chief Aaron Tartal says the storm water outfalls are more exposed than usual and that Florence brought rip currents to the area. As such, lifeguards put swimming advisories in place throughout the weekend.
