Sailboat Hits Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - The captain of a sailboat escaped injury after the vessel hit the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Bridge-tunnel operations director and police chief Edward Spencer says the bridge-tunnel wasn't damaged.

Spencer says that the 35-foot sailboat lost power and hit the southbound span exiting the tunnel at 4:48 a.m. Thursday.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert says the boat apparently hit land at an island near by bridge-tunnel first.

A Coast Guard crewman helped the sailboat captain start the vessel's engine and untangle its sail. The captain then took the sailboat to a marina in Norfolk.

Spencer says travel on the bridge-tunnel wasn't interrupted.
