LEWES, Del. – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred just before 6 a.m. Wednesday on Route 24 at Camp Arrowhead Road in Lewes.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicates Jason A. Jewell, 36 of Seaford was operating a 2002 Dodge Ram Van westbound on Route 24, just east of Camp Arrowhead Road, when his van struck William McCafferty, 75 of Lewes, who was walking southwesterly on Route 24.

Police say after the impact, Mr. McCafferty was thrown into the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jewell was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop after the collision. He and his 33 year old male passenger from Seaford were not injured in the crash.

Route 24, in the area of Camp Arrowhead Road, was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. Troopers say alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in this incident.

In a press release from Delaware State Police, “Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.”
