Del. House Republicans Select Leadership

Posted:
DOVER, DE - Meeting for the first time since the start of the 148th General Assembly two weeks ago, House Republicans voted to retain the leadership they had in the previous session.

State Rep. Danny Short, R-Seaford, will serve as the House Minority Leader.  State Rep. Deborah Hudson was selected by her peers as the House Minority Whip.

Rep. Short is serving his fifth consecutive term as the 39th District state representative.  He previously was elected to multiple terms as both a Seaford city councilman and mayor.

Rep. Hudson has served the 12th Representative District since 1994 and is the most tenured member of the House Republican Caucus.

While still in the minority, House Republicans added two seats in the most recent elections, increasing their caucus to 16 representatives.

“I was glad my colleagues chose to continue to place their faith in me,” Rep. Short said.  “House Republicans will continue to offer viable solutions to our state's many challenges that are fiscally sound and responsive to the needs of all Delawareans.”

State Rep. Hudson echoed those sentiments.  “Just because we are in the minority does not mean will sit by idly,” she said.  “We intend to be active participants in the legislative process, working to ensure that the voices of the 365,000 citizens collectively represented by our caucus members are heard.”

The leadership of the House of Representatives for the next two years will be identical to the last two years on both sides of the aisle.  On Monday, the chamber's 25 House Democrats re-elected State Reps. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth; Valerie Longhurst, D-Bear; and John Viola, D-Newark; to serve as Speaker of the House, Majority Leader, and Majority Whip, respectively.

The selection of the Speaker requires a vote by the full House of Representatives when the chamber meets for the first time January 13th, but that action is considered a formality.
